September 6th, 2014 was the 449th aniversary celebration of the founding of St Augustine. This annual event takes place on the Mission Grounds near The Great Cross that was dedicated September 8, 1565 to "celebrate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of Christianity in this land and the founding of the City of St Augustine"
Each year the landing of Don Pedro Menendez of Aviles, Spain is reenacted, followed by a mass at the rustic altar
The event is always well attended and parking is limited, plan to arrive early the event starts at 10am and is over by Noon.
